The Frog’s Ass Shot:
Favorite Cocktail in Calaveras County

Leave the martinis and manhattans in the city. In California’s Calaveras County, made famous by the Mark Twain story about a Jumping Frog Contest, the cocktail of choice is, naturally, the Frog’s Ass Shot. Bartenders in the Murphys Historic Hotel Saloon have created the concoction for more than 40 years, but no one remembers who invented it.

Here’s how it shakes up in bartender lingo:
1 count Bacardi 151 Rum;
1 count Bacardi Light Rum;
1 count Malibu Rum;
1 count Jamaican or Caribbean Coconut Rum;
Splash of Midori (a green melon liqueur).

Shake it all up with some ice and strain into a rocks glass.

The taste is tropical, slightly sweet and smooth. If Kermit tried this one, he would have to admit, “It’s easy being green!”

Murphys Historic Hotel had anchored Main Street in Murphys for 150 years and is a National Historic Landmark. Mark Twain himself was among the hotel’s famous guests. The Frog’s Ass Shot is particularly popular during the five-day Jumping Frog Jubilee, held each May in nearby Frogtown.
