Pina Colada Captures Taste of Puerto Rico

The Original Pina Colada, official drink of Puerto Rico, is a classic blend of light rum, pineapple and coconut. In 1954, a new bartender at the Caribe Hilton Hotel in San Juan set out to create an original cocktail with “a touch of zest.” After months of tinkering, he infused the flavors of his island—coconut pulp, pineapple juice and Bacardi Rum to impart an authentic taste of Puerto Rico. He emphasized the importance of using only fresh ingredients, particularly pineapple. To stress his point, he christened his new concoction Pina Colada or “strained pineapple.”

By 1978, more than three million Pina Colada cocktails were served in Puerto Rico. About that time, the Puerto Rican government declared the Pina Colada the national drink of Puerto Rico.
