Up From the Bottom Shelf: Black Valentine's Day

I have a love/hate relationship with Valentine's Day. When I'm with someone I really love being given a chance to put on a show for the current young lady of my affection. However when I'm single, there seems to be no more annoying holiday. So in college several of my friends and I started referring to February 14 as "Singles Awareness Day" and throwing "Black Valentines Parties" where the theme was a kitschy anti-celebration of Valentines. We'd rent the 1967 movie "The St. Valentine's Day Massacre" or the 1989 anti-romance comedy "The War of the Roses". Everyone would wear black. We'd play music by the Cure. And, of course, we'd also mix up a few drinks with some slightly bitter names.

The party ends up being a lot of fun, in a dark-humor sort of way. It gives all of the singletons a place to be, and gives the mixologist of the bunch a chance to try out a few new recipes. Over the years these have been my favorite creations.

Heartbreak Hotel Martini

2 oz vanilla vodka
1 oz Godiva white chocolate
1 dash orange bitters

Shake and serve neat in martini glass

Bleeding Cupid

1/2 oz peach schnapps
1/2 oz Bailey's Irish cream
1/2 oz vodka
1/2 oz grenadine syrup

Mix vodka and schnapps then add Irish cream. The Irish cream will begin to curdle immediately. So wait a few seconds and then add grenadine. This can be served either as a cocktail in an old-fashioned glass or as a shot in a double-shot glass

Black Valentine

1/3 oz Godiva chocolate liqueur
1/3 oz Kahlua coffee liqueur
1/3 oz Grenadine

Layered shot: Layer grenadine, then Godiva, and finally Kahlua.

That Blue Feeling

1 bottle Blue Moon beer
1 1/2 oz blue curacao

Mix and serve in nonic or tulip glass

Black Heart

16 oz of Guiness
2 oz orange juice
dash of bitters

Pour bitters and juice before beer to ease mixing. Serve in a 20 oz nonic or tulip glass.

Heart of Darkness

4 oz dark coffee (preferably espresso)
1 oz Myers dark rum
1 oz Tia Maria coffee liqueur
1/2 oz triple-sec

Mix and serve in a coffee mug.
