The Bitter Truth Enters U.S. Market

The Bitter Truth, a German brand of cocktail bitters and flavorings are available in the U.S. Originally used as a pharmaceutical elixir, bitters were one of the main ingredients in the earliest cocktail recipes. Bitters were the ingredient that distinguished cocktails from other categories, such as toddies, slings, fizzes, sours or punches. With Prohibition, though, drinking habits changed and the popularity of cocktail bitters declined. Only a few brands, such as Angostura Bitters, survived that period. Bitters became harder to find.

However, with the resurgence of classic cocktail culture and growth of contemporary mixology, there has been growth in international interest in bitters. In 2006, The Bitter Truth was founded by Munich mixologists Stephan Berg and Alexander Hauck, who wanted to bring complexity and innovation to their cocktails.

The Bitter Truth products now available in the U.S. include:

  • Celery Bitters: Popular in the 19th century, this is the first celery bitters introduced in decades.
  • Lemon Bitters: Bitter to the taste with notes of coriander seeds and cardamom in the background.
  • Aromatic Bitters: Bitter and tangy, reminiscent of cinnamon, cardamom, anise and cloves in the nose—like gingerbread.
  • Orange Bitters: The aroma of bitter orange peel is in the foreground, completed by spicy flavors of cardamom, caraway and nutmeg.
  • Bittermens Grapefruit Bitters: Grapefruit meets hops to create a fresh, bright citrus note. Best friends with gin, tequila, fizzy, and fruity drinks.
  • Bittermens Xocolatl Mole Bitters: Deep chocolate notes supported by classic bitter flavors and accented with a hint of spice. Good with most dark spirits, rums, and tequilas.
