The History and Evolution of Brunch

Who are we to thank for brunch, the rebellious, laid-back bonus meal that defies many of the rules established by the traditional three-times-daily meal plan? Some claim brunch emerged as a leisurely privilege for wealthy Brits during the turn of the 19th-20th century and point to Guy Beringer's 1895 essay "Brunch: A Plea." He argued, "by eliminating the need to get up early on Sunday, brunch would make life brighter for Saturday-night carousers." Others link brunch's success in the US to the similarly timed introduction of Eggs Benedict in Manhattan.

Whatever the reason for its modern day success, brunch is now a favorite meal that pairs well with a variety of occasions that include holidays, weddings, baby showers, birthdays and romantic weekend getaways. Summer, the season of extended vacations, trips to the beach and sunshine-filled days, offers the ideal months for this supplemental sit-down. Free from most of the standard meal guidelines (well balanced, taken between the hours of...), brunch has provided us with a widely accepted excuse to indulge.

The libation of choice at brunch has typically been the Mimosa, Bloody Mary or Bellini, but now, as tastes continue to evolve, new spirits are emerging. A playful color twist is a splash of X-Rated Fusion Liqueur, a pink fusion of ultra-premium French vodka and vibrant blood oranges, mingling with the juices of ripe mangoes and luscious passion fruit.
