My least favorite part of traveling is long layovers--being stuck in
an airport with overpriced hot dogs and pretzels as the only
culinary offerings, getting drinks in flimsy paper cups, and
listening to the annoying background noises.
But on a recent trip to Mexico, I found an
oasis in International Airport Benito Juarez. The Hilton Mexico City
Airport is located right in the International Terminal. It’s a short
stroll to International Terminal F1 and up the escalators to the
third level. Their parking lot is a runway. And although you can
look out at the planes from most rooms, you will never hear an
airport sound. The best sound you will hear is the piano music in
the cozy bar. And they’ll hold your hand luggage while you relax in
the restaurant or bar.
If you have a really long layover, consider
“checking in” for eight hours for only $98 and get full use of the
health spa, business office and more. If you are as serious about
being online as I am, it is probably worth checking in just for the
free business center internet access.
Prices are surprisingly reasonable. Five of the
delicious lunches prepared by a French chef are less than $10.
Knowing this, who would stay in the airport when they could be
dining elegantly?
My favorite layover spot is the Lobby Lounge,
where you can get international drinks and a variety of wines
and cigar brands. It’s open from 11 a.m. to 11:30 pm.
My recommendation: Relax. Order the tequila
sunrise. Relax. Order lunch. Relax, Your layover will soon seem way
too short. |
