Loving Shark Attacks

John and I love Shark Attacks! Shark Attack Cocktails, that is. They are unlike anything we have experienced. We relaxed with a Shark Attack every evening while vacationing in Palau. Palau is unlike any other destination we have experienced. The Western Pacific island is one of the most green and unspoiled places we have visited–and we have been to a lot of tropical destinations. The republic is comprised of 700 tree-covered islands and only 20,000 people.

The brilliant blue waters surrounding the archipelago are teeming with fish, making it a diver’s and snorkeler’s paradise. While snorkeling, John and I saw giant clams two feet wide, brilliant blue starfish, and a plethora of colorful fish and coral. One day was especially magical. In Jellyfish Lake, a saltwater landlocked lake, we snorkeled with thousands of ethereal pink stingless jellyfish. It was like participating in a jellyfish ballet as they glided and danced by us.

Each day was exciting, whether we took a snorkeling trip or explored land-based sites. We visited Palau's capital, which was obviously designed after the US Capitol building, learned about Palau’s unique culture at the museums, climbed a hill to visit a traditional men’s meeting house, took a river trip, and kayaked through the mangrove. The culture of this Micronesian island in fascinating but it is the incredible diving sites that draw most people.

On the all-day snorkeling trips we would put in on a sandy beach on secluded island for lunch. On day we noticed other people on their lunch break eagerly donning their snorkel gear and heading into the shallow water. John and I followed. For the next twenty minutes we snorkeled with black tipped reef sharks,18 of them. Lazily they glided in circles around us but never came closer than a few feet. Needless to say we kept a wary eye on them. It was an exhilarating experience.

All our days in Palau were exciting. Each day there was something new to discover, something new to learn. In the evening we returned to Palau Pacific Resort. The 5-star resort has a long white sand beach, a pool, and spa, making it the premiere resort in Palau. Each evening we watched the sunset while enjoying Palau Pacific Resort’s signature cocktail–Shark Attack. It seemed appropriate and the only shark attack we wanted to experience. Made with one ounce each of light rum, dark rum, Bacardi 151, and mango juice along with two ounces of Blue Curacao. It creates a sea blue cocktail. Strawberry puree is drizzled down the inside of the glass to simulate blood! The powerful cocktail is topped off with shark hanging on the side of the glass.

Each night after a seafood dinner on the Coconut Terrace we headed to the Mesekiu Waterhole, the beachside bar, for another Shark Attack and to watch the evening cultural show. John and I agreed, Shark Attacks, are wonderful–Shark Attack cocktails, that is.
