Unforgettable Sihanouk Ville

As a lady in red got up to leave the lobby bar in Sokha Beach Resort in Sihanouk Ville, she turned to us and said, “Try the Unforgettable – it is unforgettable.”

That sounded like a good recommendation so when John and I sat down for Happy Hour John ordered an Unforgettable Cocktail. I decided to try something different so I ordered a Sihanouk Ville Beauty.

Both are apropos to Sokha Beach Resort. They could have a cocktail called Surprise, too. John and I visited Cambodia in 2004, but on this trip we were impressed with the additions of walkways and steps at the amazing ruins of Angkor Wat. We were most impressed with the development of the beach area in Sihanouk Villa. Most “unforgettable” is the Sokha Beach Resort.

From the Cambodian capital, Phnom Penh, we took an air-conditioned bus with attendants for a mere $7.00 four hours south to Sihanouk Ville. The fare included a bottle of water and a large bun. A car from the resort was waiting to pick us up when we arrived. We didn’t know what to expect so we were amazed at the beautiful five-star resorts on the best beach in the area. The color of my Sihanouk Villa Beauty Cocktail reflected the blue sky and sea blended with the white of the sandy beach. It was a perfect mix of golden rum, coconut, passion fruit juice, pineapple juice and blue Curacao.

Truly, John’s Unforgettable Cocktail is the perfect footnote for Sokha Beach Resort. The color of his cocktail resembled the brilliant sunsets. It was wonderful, as the other guest suggested. The Unforgettable Cocktail is a mix of dark rum, contreau, Malibu, pineapple juice, coconut milk and grenadine.

Our days slipped by too quickly as we lazed by the pool, walked the beach and enjoyed the view of the Gulf of Thailand from our balcony. One day we took a three-island day trip for $15. It was a great value as we were picked up at the hotel, shuttled to the main beach, and boarded a boat with about 15 other people and headed to an island for snorkeling and then to Bamboo Island for several hours of walking the beach, frolicking in the turquoise sea, and a wonderful lunch cooked on the beach. It was the first time we had eaten barracuda which was so light and meaty that we wonder why we don’t see it on the menu in the States.

On the way back we made another snorkeling stop. Back at Sokha Beach Resort we freshened up just in time for Happy Hour and our Unforgettable Cocktails. The resort is doubling in size, adding a whole new set of accommodations around a salt-water pool with additional villas along the river. Sokha also has a hotel in Phnom Penh with an excellent central location and a large upscale resort in Siem Reap. Their Bokor Mountain Resort and Casino is scheduled to open in 2011. John and I agreed that we will need to return to Cambodia again next year.
