It’s summer
and the living is easy. John and I were living the good life in Door
County. Door County is
Wisconsin’s pinkie-like peninsula that juts out into Lake Michigan.
This cherry- growing region has been dubbed the “Cape Cod of the
Midwest.”
We stayed at
Gustave’s Getaway, a wonderful cabin in the woods that was once the
family homestead but is now a modern, comfy accommodation. When John
walked in he took one look around and said, “We’ll
buy it.” Well, of course, it wasn’t for sale but we pretended it was
ours for a few days.
Do you ever
watch Good Morning America?
The place that won GMA’s Best Breakfast in America Challenge is in
Door County. Naturally,
we had to start our day at The White Gull Inn with their Cherry
Cream Cheese filled French Toast with real maple syrup.
Then it was off
to the Orchard Country Winery where they grow cherries, grapes, and
other crops. On the tour
we learned that they only grow tart cherries because sweet cherries
are only good for eating fresh whereas tart cherries are good for
everything from pies to cherry honey mustard pretzel dip to wine. It
is amazing the items that are made better by adding cherries.
Orchard Country is also where we caught the Door County narrated
trolley tour that led us through quaint towns, through a park to a
scenic lookout high on a bluff, and to a lighthouse.
Then it was time
for lunch and we headed to Wilson’s in the historic little town of
Ephraim, where we passed on lunch but could not pass on the ice
cream float made with homemade root beer. Wilson’s has been serving
ice cream since 1906.
Then it was time for a little
exercise, so it was off for a short walk and bike
ride through
Peninsula State Park. One of us went zip lining - one of us did not!
The day before,
we had taken a scenic cruise along the shore and noticed a little
restaurant tucked in the trees on a beautiful bay. We decided that
was the place to have dinner. At Fred & Fuzzy’s
Waterfront Grill,
located on Little Sister Bay, we relaxed, marveled at the view and
sampled their signature libation.
Ah, what a way
to end a great day. Sitting under the trees on a beautiful summer day sipping margaritas
– and not a traditional
margaritas but a Door County Cherry
Margarita made with one-half Tart Cherry, one-half Margarita mix,
and tequila – you choose how much tequila! Add ice and blend. Ah… love living the good life
in Door County sipping Door
County Cherry Margaritas reliving our wonderful day.
The summer is
never long enough. Our stay in Door County wasn’t long enough. But Fred and Fuzzy’s always
has enough Cherry Margaritas.
