Getting in the holiday spirit in Ojai, California

John and I live in snow country, so we think that holiday time and snow have to happen at the same time. When we found ourselves in Ojai, California, we spent sunny snow-free days visiting farms. Ojai is a lovely, small community off the beaten track north of Los Angeles. It is a blend of farms, spas, and boutique shops. We visited the Asquith Farm where we toured the olive grove with olive trees dating back 150 years. The tour begins outside with the history of the grove, an explanation of the olive varieties, the maturing process and harvesting of the olives, and continues inside with how they create their premium-quality olive oils followed by tastings. Along with their Extra Virgin Estate Olive Oil they also offer olive oil infused with a variety of flavors including rosemary, garlic, lemon and pomegranate.

It was shirtsleeve weather, so we just could not get in the Christmas spirit. After our farm tour we headed back to Lavender Inn to a social hour with wine and cheese. Lavender Inn is a wonderful luxury lodging that is the oldest building in Ojai. It was once a schoolhouse that now has a beautiful garden area and spa. Located in the center of town it is close to shopping, the local museum, and dining, with the farms just a short drive away. All the rooms are uniquely decorated and sport a balcony. When we inquired about a place for dinner the innkeeper suggested we dine at Suzanne’s Cuisine Restaurant.

As soon as we walked into Suzanne’s and saw the brightly decorated Christmas tree and other decorations we realized that snow is not necessary to get in the holiday spirit. To enhance the mood John and I ordered some spirits, namely one of Suzanne’s signature Christmas-looking Limoncello Pomegranate Martini made with 1 oz of Ventura Limoncello Company Originale, 1 oz vodka, and 1 1/ 2 oz pomegranate juice shaken with ice. It seemed so appropriate since the Limoncello was made nearby and pomegranates are just one of the many crops grown in the Ojai area.

In fact Suzanne’s Cuisine menu offers a wide variety of selections that include local produce such as butternut squash puree soup, assorted grilled and mixed vegetables with wild and brown rice, and other main dishes accompanied with fresh local veggies. From lovely fresh baked breads to our entrees laced with fresh herbs grown in Suzanne’s private garden to the friendly staff it was a memorable evening.

Suzanne’s Cuisine is a mother-daughter enterprise with Suzanne the talented cook who handles everything in the kitchen while the daughter uses her MBA expertise to keep the front of the house running with superb efficiency. The restaurant with a real wood fire ablaze, the holiday decorations, and staff that made us feel like family we realized that snow is not necessary to get in the holiday spirit.
