Every Day is a Princess Day at the Mayan Princess Resort

John and I are frequent visitors to Honduras and every time we visit we try to relax for a few days on Roatan Island, a short hop from the mainland. We have seen Roatan go from a laid-back place frequented mainly by the dive crowd to the present where there are beautiful residential communities and wonderful resorts. We love checking out the various resorts. This was the first time we stayed at the Mayan Princess Resort. Our spacious room was beautiful with a living room, a kitchen and dining area plus a balcony.

We spent relaxing days alternating between swimming in the Caribbean and lounging in the pool. One day, Yean, the very helpful tour director, arranged for us to visit Maya Key, the everything place. Maya Key has a great beach, a pretty pool, and a rescued animal center, but I was especially impressed with the replicas of the Hieroglyphic Staircase and a stele of a Mayan ruler based on those at Copan, Honduras’ premiere Mayan archeological site. A long dock allows for easy access to the coral reef for snorkeling, one of the things I love to do. The on-site guide pointed out a hidden lobster, a colorful conch, and an urchin.

Most days we just enjoyed the Mayan Princess Resort. Even though we had a complete kitchen the Resort’s meals featuring fresh fruit and fish were excellent. So why cook? One favorite was the Coconut Shrimp that made use of the coconut trees that grow on the property. We ended each day watching the sunset with our Mayan Princess Mango Cocktail created by Santos, the Mayan Princess Captain Mesero. To tell the truth we didn’t always wait until sunset for the cocktail; it was refreshing any time of day. The Mayan Princess Mango Cocktail is made with fresh Honduran mangos blended with crushed ice, to which a little strawberry syrup and a shot of milk are added. Oh, and Santos didn’t forget the most important part—Honduran rum.

One evening the resort had a colorful dance program by the Garifuna, an Afro-Caribbean group who have lived in Honduras since the 1700s. Another night we enjoyed a brilliant fire dance show on the beach.

No trip is ever long enough. There were a variety of activities to do such as revitalizing at Mayan Princess’ Kukut Spa with their Noni Treatment that makes use of the fruit of noni tree, which is reputed to cure a myriad of ailments. Plus there is diving, zip lining, sea kayaking, jet skiing, and rides on the banana boat. But we so relished our days relaxing on the beach and by the pool that we hated to exert ourselves. What more can one ask for than the tropical sea, warm sun, swaying palm trees and a Mayan Princess Mango Cocktail? The Mayan Princess Resort and Mango Cocktails is one of those places that we yearn to return to time and time again.
