This cool cocktail had a literary inspiration. Felix Vega, Director of Special Events at Mango Tropical Café in Miami Beach explains:

"A while back, a mystery writer by the name of Don Bruns contacted me to ask me if we could make up a drink for him named after his new book, South Beach Shakedown. He said he always promotes his books with a signature drink that is only found in the locations he writes about. South Beach Shakedown, his fourth book, mentions Mango’s Tropical Café."

The South Beach Shakedown

In a hurricane glass, mix:
1¼ oz. Captain Morgan’s Parrot Bay, coconut flavor
1½ oz. Zacapa Rum Centenario
¾ oz. Amaretto

Fill the glass with pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine. Garnish with a slice of pineapple, cherry and umbrella.

"Mr. Bruns visited us recently and got to taste the first South Beach Shakedown. He decided that this drink will be the welcoming drink for all his guests at the release party of his new book sometime in September here at our very own Mojito Room at Mango’s Tropical Café. He is promoting his book with our recipe printed on coasters, which he distributes at his book signing engagements."
