Drinking with the Blue Lady

Order a Blue Lady Cocktail at California’s Moss Beach Distillery restaurant in Half Moon Bay and you may get more than you anticipated. For instance, the Tiffany-style lights hanging above the bar may begin to sway for no apparent reason. Don’t be startled—they’re programmed to do that in honor of the drink’s namesake, the Blue Lady, the famed ghost of California’s Moss Beach Distillery, made even more famous when it was featured on the NBC series “Unsolved Mysteries.”

The legend of the Blue Lady is the classic tale of lost love. The most common version tells of a married lady, usually dressed in blue, who was carrying on an illicit affair with a handsome ladies’ man who played the piano at the bar. She was unaware that her lover had another female interest even as her love for him deepened with romantic moonlight walks on the beach and secret rendezvous at a hotel that once stood next to the Distillery.

During a violent storm late one November night, she died in an automobile accident on her way to a tryst. Since then, she has been seen on many occasions wandering aimlessly along the beach and searching the restaurant for her lover. Sometimes the Blue Lady, in playful mood, provides a little levitation to spook unsuspecting diners.

Moss Beach Distillery’s signature drink, The Blue Lady, is a mix of Kettle-One Vodka, Parfait amour, 7-Up and squeeze of a fresh Lemon. They may have the lights programmed to sway but if you feel a rush of freezing cold air on the back of your neck you may be sipping a Blue Lady with the Blue Lady.
