“No More Worries” Inspires Hawaiian Bartender

Smooth cocktail wins Outrigger On the Beach Signature Drink contest

Master musician Led Kaapana’s “Pau Pilikea” is all about “no more worries.” The song is also the laid-back inspiration behind bartender Amie Fujiwara’s winning creation in the second annual Outrigger “On the beach” Signature Drink Contest.

Pau Pilikea is a creamy blend of Bailey’s Irish Crème, Kahlua Liquor, Stolichnya Vodka, liquid ice cream and fresh banana and poured into a glass swirled with chocolate syrup. Fujiwara, who works at Duke’s Canoe Club in Waikiki, describes her sweet concoction as “indulgent in every way imaginable. The minute your lips touch the chocolate-rimmed glass, you will forget all your troubles, and the only thing your mouth will let you do is smile and say, ‘pau pilikea!’”

Ten drinks from eight bartenders from restaurants based at Outrigger’s hotels were submitted this year. Second place honors went to John Groth of the Ocean House Restaurant at the Outrigger Reef on the Beach, with his drink, “Slack Tides,” inspired by a guitar piece of the same name composed by award-winning musician Daniel Ho.

Fujiwara’s no-worries drink earned her a trip to Los Angeles where she prepared and served Pau Pilikea at a private Hawaii Grammy reception hosted by Outrigger.

The “On the Beach” Signature Drink Contest is sponsored by Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach and Outrigger Reef on the Beach as part of the hotels’ ongoing support of Hawaii’s musical arts. The properties host educational events featuring island musicians and artists throughout the year. The properties were the site of the Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (HARA) annual music conference and they sponsor the Lifetime Achievement Awards at the annual Hoku Awards.
