The Rumrunner: The Real Story

Holiday Isle Beach Resort and Marina in Islamorada, Florida Keys is the home of the Tiki Bar where the famous Rumrunner was originally created more than thirty years ago by a creative mixologist with too much stock on hand.

In 1972, when "Tiki” John Ebert took over as manager of the Tiki Bar, he discovered enormous stockpiles of Blackberry Brandy, Banana Liqueur and 151 Rum. He wondered what he could do to use the excess supply of liquor and decided that the best idea would be to create a new drink using these ingredients.

After a few trials, he came up with the Rumrunner, but his concoction was an unappetizing color. Someone suggested using grenadine to make the drink more appealing. Tiki John used the idea and the icy drink became so popular that it started burning out the blenders used to make it. He then came up with another brilliant idea: Use Taylor Frozen Custard machines to make the concoction, and the rest is history.

The rumrunner is known and served worldwide. Other bars may lay claim to the Rumrunner, but Holiday Isle is the true home of the famous drink.
