Why it works

This version eases off the Campari, so bourbon and vermouth lead and the bitterness sits in the background. The result is rounder and sweeter than a classic Boulevardier, closer to a Manhattan. Stirring keeps it smooth and clear, and serving it up in a coupe concentrates the aroma of the orange twist.

Substitutions

  • Rye makes it spicier and drier.
  • Raise the Campari to 1 oz for the classic balance.
  • Any sweet vermouth works; keep it refrigerated.

Questions

How is this different from a Boulevardier?
It uses half as much Campari, so it is less bitter and lets the bourbon lead.
Up or on the rocks?
Up in a coupe as written; a large ice cube works if you prefer it colder for longer.
