Why it works
Punch is built for a crowd. Orange and pineapple juice give body and sweetness, lime adds acidity, and a little simple syrup balances it. The ratio is roughly 3 parts rum to 3½ parts juice, so it is strong; serving it over ice adds the dilution. Citrus slices add aroma.
Substitutions
- Mix rum styles (white and aged) for more depth.
- Add soda water just before serving to lighten it.
- Use a large block of ice to keep it cold without watering it down quickly.
Questions
- How many does it serve?
- About 12–15 drinks of 4 oz over ice.
- Can it be made ahead?
- Yes. Mix everything except ice a few hours ahead and refrigerate.
- How strong is this punch?
- Strong. Three cups of rum in roughly six and a half cups of mix is close to half spirit before ice, so pour 4 oz servings over plenty of ice, or stretch the bowl with a cup or two of soda water.
- Is there a non-alcoholic version?
- Replace the rum with chilled black tea or ginger beer. Tea keeps the punch dry with some tannin; ginger beer makes it sweeter and spicier. Reduce the simple syrup if using ginger beer.
