Why it works

Six to eight mint leaves, muddled gently with powdered sugar and water, make a quick mint syrup in the cup. Bourbon and plenty of crushed ice do the rest: chilling, diluting and softening the spirit. A dusting of powdered sugar over the mint garnish adds a frosty look.

Substitutions

  • Simple syrup works in place of powdered sugar and water.
  • Spearmint is the traditional choice.
  • A rocks glass works if there is no julep cup.
