The water stands in for the melt from shaking: about 25% for a shaken drink. It is an approximation, so taste and adjust. Chill the batch at least 2 hours and pour over fresh ice.

Use a 2 liter pitcher, or split it between two 1 liter bottles.

Add at serving: top each glass with soda water. Bubbles go flat in a batch, so they stay out of it.

Why it works

Cucumber and mint give a cool, green freshness; lime adds acidity and simple syrup balances it. Vodka keeps the base neutral so the fresh flavors lead. Shaking with the cucumber releases its juice, and soda water on top lightens the drink.

Substitutions

  • Gin in place of vodka adds botanicals.
  • Muddle cucumber first for a stronger flavor.
  • Sparkling wine in place of soda makes it closer to a spritz.
