Maple Whiskey Sour batch
AmountIngredient
16 oz · 480 mlWhiskey
8 oz · 240 mlLemon Juice
4 oz · 120 mlMaple Syrup
7 oz · 210 mlCold water, for dilution (approx.)

The water stands in for the melt from shaking: about 25% for a shaken drink. It is an approximation, so taste and adjust. Chill the batch at least 2 hours and pour over fresh ice.

Use a 2 liter pitcher, or split it between two 1 liter bottles.

Why it works

Maple replaces sugar, adding a toasty, woody sweetness that matches whiskey’s oak. A full ounce of lemon to half an ounce of maple makes this tart, and maple’s richness keeps it from tasting thin. Shaking hard chills and aerates the drink, and serving it on the rocks keeps it cold.

Substitutions

  • Use pure maple syrup, not pancake syrup.
  • Add an egg white for a silky foam (dry shake first).
  • Bourbon gives a rounder drink; rye gives a spicier one.

Variations

Questions

Is this sour or sweet?
Tart. Reduce the lemon to ¾ oz for a more balanced drink.
Which maple syrup?
