Why it works

Blackberry liqueur adds fruit and color, and lemon and simple syrup make a sour around the gin. Measured in equal half ounces, the sweet and sour sides balance. It is shaken and served over ice in an old fashioned glass, where the berries and lemon slice garnish add aroma.

Substitutions

  • Crème de mûre or any blackberry liqueur works.
  • Muddle a few fresh blackberries for more fruit.
  • Crushed ice makes it colder and lighter.
